Founded in 1953 by Howard R. Hughes, the aviator and industrialist, the Chevy
Chase-headquartered institute employs more than 2,600 individuals across the
U.S. With an endowment of $18.7 billion, it is one of the largest private funding
organizations for biological and medical research in the United States.
